Unity in Action Multiplatform game development in C# Joe Hocking 9781617294969 Books Reviews

  • I am a professional programmer. This book was perfect for me it taught me the "Unity way" of doing things. Not everything was intuitive at first, but the complete examples and line-by-line explanations made it easy to grasp the concepts presented. I feel like I have the tools to go make my first game.
  • Very useful
  • Read this book as I need to use Unity for a project. This is definitely a great read.
One thing to note is that with Unity 2018.3 released, some GUI related details are a bit outdated. Other than that, the book does what it's supposed to do!
  • Let me start off by saying that I started this part of my journey by buying the cheaper books that claim to teach you C#. Those books taught me nothing compared to what this book has taught me. This book literally took me from not knowing a thing about programming to starting my project within a week.

This book is easy to follow. It uses common language and the images in the book could easily help anyone starting from scratch.

I highly recommend this book. Buy it now!
  • I'm beginning to learn game programming with Unity and purchased this book after trying out some online tutorials. While I found online tutorials to be a great way to get started, learning through this book was a drastically more efficient for me - the instructions are clear and detailed, and allowed me to easily expand upon the material being taught. After just a few chapters, I managed to build a playable small first person shooter game. The book teaches advanced scripting in a way that is challenging, but still easy to follow through. It starts from the very basics, but also teaches advanced topics such as connecting your game to the network or deploying the game on a phone.
  • I'm new to Unity development and was looking for a good resource that would cover the basics and get me up and running quickly.

Joe's book is beautifully paced and covers all the fundamentals in an easy to follow and explained way. You actually build and test at each step getting immediate feedback on what you just covered. To me getting to see the sample projects you build slowly evolve kept me interested and keen to complete the next section.

For newcomers to Unity I think this is an excellent kick off resource and you have the added bonus that Manning Publications make it easy to get a free electronic copy of the book as well through their website if you own the hardcopy edition as well as a dedicated book forum page for errata and discussions with other readers. Joe seems to be very active in the forum which is an added bonus if you have a question.
  • This is a great book. It is very easy to follow, and doesn't hold your hand too much after the first few chapters. It's very easy to get things up and running. I bought this from the publisher's website, so I have a hardcopy as well as digital. With the digital, you also get source code for all the chapters, which can come in handy the few times something isn't super clear in the book. I would highly recommend this book.
  • I had a copy of the first version of Unity in Action, and it was a very good book. I remember immediately applying the concepts that I learned there when I was trying to apply for a game developer job and there was a kind of practical test; I wouldn't pass it if I hadn't read this book (one of the tests was creating a 1st person prototype with a simple AI NPC following the character). This 2nd version expands on the content and updates the book to Unity 2017.1 on release, which is good enough of an update. One important note is that even though this book is good for beginners of the Unity Game Engine, it caters more to the programming side of the game process, so it might be a challenge to some, but those who persevere will be rewarded. Also, there are few books that (really) focus on the programming side of Unity, so this is a plus for me.
